The Wolverine

The wolverine (/ˈwʊlvəriːn/), Gulo gulo (Gulo is Latin for "glutton"), also referred to as the glutton, carcajou, skunk bear, or quickhatch, is the largest land-dwelling species of the family Mustelidae (weasels). It is a stocky and muscular carnivore, more closely resembling a small bear than other mustelids. The wolverine, a solitary animal has a reputation for ferocity and strength out of proportion to its size, with the documented ability to kill prey many times larger than itself.

The wolverine is found primarily in remote reaches of the Northern boreal forests and subarctic and alpine tundra of the Northern Hemisphere, with the greatest numbers in northern Canada, the US state of Alaska, the mainland Nordic countries of Europe, and throughout western Russia and Siberia. Its population has steadily declined since the 19th century owing to trapping, range reduction and habitat fragmentation. The wolverine is now essentially absent from the southern end of its European range.

A man who 'tracked down and throttled' a 13-year-old after they clashed while playing an online game today avoided going to jail

A man who 'tracked down and throttled' a 13-year-old after they clashed while playing an online game today avoided going to jail.
Unemployed Mark Bradford, 46, admitted one count of assault by beating and was handed a 16-week prison sentence at Plymouth Magistrates' Court, suspended for 12 months.
Bradford had 'lost it' after the teenager gloated at his character's death while they played Call of Duty: Black Ops over the internet.
The father of three from Plymouth's St Budeaux walked 200 yards to the house where the boy was playing the computer game with friends and grabbed him by the throat.
The attack only stopped when a mother at the house pulled Bradford away from the youngster.
District Judge Robert Morgan-Jones said: 'Mr Bradford, you are a 46-year-old man. It is of great concern that you, as an adult, who I would expect to be able to control yourself, managed to blur the lines of fantasy and the real world in which you live in.
'In July you were playing an online game in which you can communicate with others playing.
'As a result of what happened during this game, words were passed between you and a 13-year-old boy.
'Clearly you were upset. You then decided to leave your home address and physically confront the child. This involved putting your hands around his neck.

Suspended sentence: Bradford was given 16 weeks for attacking the teenager who gunned down his character in online game Call of Duty

'I do not accept, whatever he said, that you should have behaved in the way you did.
'He was a vulnerable victim and placing your hands around his neck put him in fear of injury. It must have been a very frightening experience for him.

'The seriousness of this case means a custodial sentence is appropriate - the issue is whether to suspend it.
'I take into account your guilty plea and the remorse you have shown.'
Bradford, who refused to comment today, was ordered to wear an electronic tag for eight weeks and was given a 7pm to 7am curfew. He was also ordered to pay £80 compensation to the teenager.
The 46-year-old was playing the war game on his PlayStation 3 console on July 1 when he was subjected to a barrage of taunts and abuse, including being called a 'd***head'.
The 'banter' between him and the 13-year-old became personal after the boy gunned down Bradford's character and the man admitted he 'lost it' and stormed round to confront the youngster.
He barged into the living room of the house and placed both hands around the teenager's throat in a 'revenge attack', which caused reddening and a scratch to the boy's neck.

The youngster, who cannot be identified, said last month: 'I was just sat playing. We'd had a bit of a joke and then he stormed in and grabbed me. I didn't know what was going on.'
The victim's 33-year-old mother said after the attack: 'It's pathetic that a grown man would attack a defenceless child like this.
'If you can't handle losing to a child then you shouldn't be playing games.
'I know Mark and went straight round when I found out what had happened. I was fuming. But rather than have it out with him, I got the police involved.'
Bradford, who reportedly has mental health issues, said after last month's hearing: 'I'd been playing the whole day and he was baiting me and just would not shut up.
'I just lost it. In a moment of madness I went round to the house. I didn't know what I was going to do.
'It wasn't malice. I just grabbed him. I've seen him since and apologised. The injuries weren't that bad but I do regret it.'
Call Of Duty features a variety of war scenes and carries an 18 guidance certificate.
Participants combat each other online in real time and can communicate throughout the violent battles.

Taj Mahal

The Taj Mahal  more often meaning Crown of the Palace is an ivory-white marble mausoleum on the south bank of the Yamuna river in the Indian city of Agra. It was commissioned in 1632 by the Mughal emperor, Shah Jahan (reigned 1628–1658), to house the tomb of his favourite wife, Mumtaz Mahal. The tomb is the centrepiece of a 17-hectare (42-acre)[5] complex, which includes a mosque and a guest house, and is set in formal gardens bounded on three sides by a crenellated wall.

Construction of the mausoleum was essentially completed in 1643 but work continued on other phases of the project for another 10 years. The Taj Mahal complex is believed to have been completed in its entirety in 1653 at a cost estimated at the time to be around 32 million rupees, which in 2015 would be approximately 52.8 billion rupees (US$827 million). The construction project employed some 20,000 artisans under the guidance of a board of architects led by the court architect to the emperor, Ustad Ahmad Lahauri.

The Taj Mahal was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983 for being "the jewel of Muslim art in India and one of the universally admired masterpieces of the world's heritage". Described by Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore as "the tear-drop on the cheek of time", it is regarded by many as the best example of Mughal architecture and a symbol of India's rich history. The Taj Mahal attracts 7–8 million visitors a year. In 2007, it was declared a winner of the New7Wonders of the World (2000–2007) initiative.

Sugar Ray Robinson

In June 1947, after four non-title bouts, Robinson was scheduled to defend his title for the first time in a bout against Jimmy Doyle.] Robinson initially backed out of the fight because he had a dream that he was going to kill Doyle. A priest and a minister convinced him to fight. Sadly, his dream proved true.[ On June 25, 1947 Robinson dominated Doyle and scored a decisive knockout in the eighth round that knocked Doyle unconscious and resulted in Doyle's death later that night.Robinson said that the impact of Doyle's death was "very trying".

After his death, criminal charges were threatened against Robinson in Cleveland, up to and including manslaughter, though none actually materialized. After learning of Doyle's intentions of using the bout's money to buy his mother a house, Robinson gave Doyle's mother the money from his next four bouts so she could purchase herself a home, fulfilling her son's intention.

sand tiger shark embryonic cannibalism

Shark embryos cannibalize their littermates in the womb, with the largest embryo eating all but one of its siblings.
Now, researchers know why: It's part of a struggle for paternity in utero, where babies of different fathers compete to be born.
The researchers, who detailed their findings today (April 30) in the journal Biology Letters, analyzed shark embryos found in sand tiger sharks (Carcharias taurus) at various stages of gestation and found that the later in pregnancy, the more likely the remaining shark embryos had just one father.
That finding suggests the cannibalism seen in these embryos is a competitive strategy by which males try to ensure their paternity.
"In some species, the struggle for paternity continues beyond the point where the female [mates with] the male," said study co-author Demian Chapman, a marine biologist at Stony Brook University of New York.
Mini-cannibals
Full-grown sand tiger sharks are approximately 8.2 feet (2.5 meters) long, and mothers typically give birth to two baby sharks, each about 3.3 feet (1 m) long.
Since the 1980s, when detailed autopsies of sand tiger sharks revealed embryos in the stomachs of other embryos, researchers had known that the shark fetuses cannibalized each other in utero about five months into their nearly yearlong gestation. Legend has it that a shark embryo actually bit a researcher's hand during a dissection when the researcher reached into the uterus of the shark's mother, Chapman said.
While 12 littermates may start out the journey, all but one is devoured by the biggest in the pack. That strategy allows sand tiger sharks to have much larger babies at birth than other shark species, making the little ones relatively safe from other predators, Chapman said.
But scientists didn't know why the sharks were cannibalizing each other. One possibility is that females were mating with multiple partners and that the cannibalization helped only one father's genes remain dominant.
To find out, Chapman and his colleagues studied genetic samples from 15 pregnant female sharks that had died in nets off the coast of South Africa. (The nets were put in place to protect swimmers from deadly bites from great white sharks and bull sharks, but the nets occasionally snare and kill sand tiger sharks.)
Paternity struggle
Of those 15 female sharks, 10 of the sharks carried just two embryos, while the remaining five were in an earlier stage of gestation and had five to seven embryos in utero.
The team then used DNA analysis to determine paternity.
"It's exactly the same sort of DNA testing that you might see on Maury Povich to figure out how many dads there are," Chapman told LiveScience.
Those litters with five to seven embryos had at least two fathers (embryos from other fathers may have already disappeared), while the litters with just two sharks more often had just one father.
That suggested one embryo — possibly the one that grew biggest first — tended to devour embryos from other fathers over its full siblings.
"Basically, that loser father ultimately provided food for a rival male," Chapman said.
Sexual selection
It's still a mystery exactly what makes one father successful over another, said James J. Gelsleichter, a marine biologist at the University of North Florida who was not involved in the study.
"Sexual selection is very much like an evolutionary arms race, and the males and females are basically one-upping each other," Gelsleichter told LiveScience.
A possibility is that embryos from the first male to fertilize the female simply get biggest first, devouring their littermates.
The strategy could also help females select good mates. Shark mating involves violent biting, so intrauterine cannibalism may allow females to avoid resisting and avoid being "too choosy" about mating, while still ensuring that a high-quality male sires her offspring, Gelsleicther said.

Earth Day

April 22 : EARTH DAY.
A day that concerns us all, wherever or whomever we are, the EARTH is our precious temporary home we need to take great care of.
There is one very worrisome matter (PLASTIC) , we could change overnight if we did just the following:

STOP USING PLASTIC BAGS!!! Boycott the use of PLASTIC bags , set an example , always take your own shopping bags with you. Plastic is one of the biggest destroyers of our environment, animal life, sea and fish, our earth. (takes as long as 1000 years to decompose). Fish and animals get plastic in their stomachs, suffocate often, and the ocean is filled with plastic debris.

So make a vow: STOP using PLASTIC bags and if you can, also refuse to buy water in throw away plastic bottles. lets make a very big difference, overnight, to our world, our future.
Have a happy and blissful Earth Day, friends !

(and oh yes, why not plant an extra tree in your garden or pot a plant or herb? even the smallest of places can have a herb growing or a small plant. Lets do it! Green the world. Plastic free. A great beginning <3 :)

Supreme Court rejects plea to bring back Kohinoor Diamond

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday said it cannot pass an order to the United Kingdom for reclaiming the Kohinoor Diamond or stop it from being auctioned.
The verdict comes after a plea was filed seeking directions to bring back the priceless diamond to India. However, a bench headed by Chief Justice J S Khehar said it is impossible for the country to ask a foreign government to not auction a property.
Disposing of a plea seeking directions to bring back the treasured diamond to India, a bench headed by Chief Justice J S Khehar said it cannot ask a foreign government not to auction a property.
The court made it clear it could not pass an order with regard to a property which was in another country.
"We are quite surprised that such petitions are filed for properties which are in the USA and the UK. What kind of a writ petition is this," the bench, also comprising Justices D Y Chandrachud and S K Kaul, commented.
The apex court referred to an affidavit filed by the Centre and said: "the Government of India continues to explore ways and means with the UK government on the issue."
The petitions, filed by an NGO, the All India Human Rights and Social Justice Front, and Heritage Bengal, a registered organisation, were tagged together by the court last year.
The pleas had said "India won independence in 1947. But successive governments at the Centre have made little or no attempt to bring back the Kohinoor diamond from the United Kingdom to India, the place of its origin."
"Whenever issues have been raised, central governments maintained on the floor of Parliament or in reply to RTI queries that Kohinoor is an Indian artifact but claims for repatriation thereof cannot be made for the same is not covered by the UNESCO Convention, 1972. "The lackadaisical approach of successive Governments in making positive and meaningful diplomatic parleys has not been in the national interest. All attempts on the part of the petitioners and other right-thinking persons to activate the Central Government have failed," they had said.
The Centre had earlier told the Supreme Court that Kohinoor was neither "forcibly taken", nor "stolen" by British rulers but given to the East India Company by the rulers of Punjab.

The Kohinoor was neither "forcibly taken", nor "stolen" by British rulers but given to them.

Does this seem like a fair judgment?

World’s ‘heaviest’ woman Eman Ahmed lost 242kg in two months, says doctor

The sudden weight loss is surprising for her doctors because they were expecting a slow drop. (HT File)

Eman Ahmed, the Egyptian woman who came to India in February for treatment, has lost 242 kg, said Dr Muffazal Lakdawala, the doctor heading the team of surgeons treating her at Saifee Hospital.
A little over a month after she was put on a special diet, which was followed by a surgery on March 7, the 36-year-old now weighs 262kg — an improvement that has also helped her organs function better.
Dr Lakdawala said the extent of the post-surgical recovery was beyond his expectations. “The surgery (Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy) and a special diet has helped her lose 242kg (or 50%) since she landed in India.”
The sudden weight loss is surprising for her doctors because they were expecting a slow drop.
Last month, Dr Lakdawala had said after the surgery:“The initial improvement will be because of rapid water loss... we think she will lose another 20-30 kg a month over the next few months.”
But the rapid improvement of Iman, who weighed 504kg when she came to India, has left her doctors pleased.

More than 50 Afghan soldiers killed by Taliban suicide attackers at army base

More than 50 Afghan soldiers killed by     Taliban suicide attackers at army base

More than 50 Afghan soldiers have been killed after Taliban suicide attackers disguised as army personnel targeted a national army base in northern Afghanistan. It’s the deadliest attack in the country since July 2016, when two Isis suicide bombers killed 80 Hazara protesters.
According to Zulmay Wesa, commander of 209th corps in Balkh province, a group of suicide attackers manning at least two Afghan national army vehicles managed to pass the first security gate on Friday afternoon.
When they were stopped at the second gate, one of the attackers blew himself up, and the rest entered the base, Wesa said. They went straight to the mosque where ANA soldiers were praying, and opened fire.
“After prayer we went outside and saw an army vehicle with three to five people in. They came out and opened fire with Kalashnikovs,” said a bodyguard at the base, asking not to be named.
Elsewhere on the base, at least one attacker went on a shooting rampage in a dining facility, according to an American security official. He also confirmed that “probably more than 50” had been killed in the attack.
The US military confirmed that coalition personnel were present at the Mazar-i-Sharif base, but there were no reports of casualties.
In a statement, the US military in Afghanistan condemned the attack.

Angel Oak Tree

The Angel Oak Tree is estimated to be in excess of 400-500 years old, stands 66.5 ft (20 m) tall, measures 28 ft (8.5 m) in circumference, and produces shade that covers 17,200 square feet (1,600 m2). From tip to tip Its longest branch distance is 187 ft.  There is considerable debate about the age of the Angel Oak.  Some contend that it is 1,500 years old.  Most believe that the more conservative estimates are more accurate.

It is an absolute must see for anyone visiting Charleston South Carolina. It is on everyone’s top ten list of things to do in Charleston. Despite being located on John’s Island, the Angel Oak has come to symbolize Charleston South Carolina. A large number of people search for “Angel Oak Charleston South Carolina” even thought this tree is on John’s Island. It is a southern live oak located in Angel Oak Park, on Johns Island SC.
For those visiting Kiawah or Seabrook islands, you will drive right past the Angel Oak.
The Angel Oak Tree is thought to be one of the oldest living things in the country. The land where the Angel Oak Tree stands was part of Abraham Waight’s 1717 land grant. The City of Charleston now owns the property. The Angel Oak Park is free and the tree should be added to any visit to Charleston, Kiawah or Seabrook Islands. In fact, if you are going to Kiawah Island or Seabrook Islands, you will likely drive within a few hundred feet of the Angel Oak Tree
